Social media giant Facebook on Thursday barred BJP politician Raja Singh from using its platform over violation of its policy on content promoting violence and hate. The action has come amidst scrutiny of the social media platform by a parliamentary panel over its alleged bias in handling of hate speech by politicians from the ruling BJP.
"We have banned Raja Singh from Facebook for violating our policy prohibiting those that promote or engage in violence and hate from having a presence on our platform,” a Facebook spokesperson said in an emailed statement. Facebook has banned Raja Singh from Instagram as well, its affiliated social media platform.
The statement added that Facebook follows an extensive process for evaluating potential violators. The decision to remove the BJP leader’s account was taken after the conclusion of the process, it added.
Facebook, with more than 300 million users in India, has come under the scanner in the country after a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report claimed that the social media giant’s content policies favoured the ruling BJP in India.
As per the report, Facebook had turned a blind eye to hate speech posted on its platform by BJP politicians including MLA Raja Singh. Ever since, the ruling BJP and Congress have been engaged in a war of words over Facebook’s alleged bias. Read More
